The Volkswagen Beetle could survive as an electric rear-wheel drive

The Volkswagen Beetle could have continuity beyond the current generation. The German brand is studying the possibility of a new generation, although it would be a purely electric model with rear-wheel drive.

According to recent statements by Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess , the company could give the green light to the development of a new generation of the Beetle , although the car would no longer be as we know it today.

“The next decision on electric cars will be what kind of emotional concepts we need,” Diess told Autocar.

When asked to explain “emotional concepts” he used the new Microbus as an example, and mentioned other possibilities for new retro VWs.

Diess hasn’t decided whether or not VW will build another Beetle, but if it does, it’ll be an EV.

“If we wanted to do a Beetle, electrically it would be much better than today’s model, much closer to history, because it could be rear-wheel drive,” he said.

While a new, electric Beetle isn’t confirmed yet, there’s reason to be optimistic for it. Diess was a major champion for the return of the Microbus, so clearly he’s into the whole retro EV thing.
