Shocking images of the spanking of a woman who committed adultery in Indonesia
The Aceh region is the only one in the country where violent condemnations are allowed according to the sharia.
Ten people were flogged on Friday for adultery in the Indonesian province of Aceh, The Sun reported . Photographs broadcast on the internet show a man and a woman being led to a covered platform to be beaten by a masked executioner.
The brutal sentence for adultery, according to Sharia (Islamic law), forced the woman to kneel before being savagely beaten. Usually, the condemned are beaten up to 29 times for their so-called crime.
The lashes occurred this Friday in Banda Aceh and are the last to emerge from the only province in the country that implements this law.
About 90 percent of the 255 million people living in Indonesia are moderate Muslims. But the Aceh region is allowed sharia punishments as part of a 2005 peace agreement that ended a three-decade insurgency.
In September, a married Indonesian woman was hospitalized after being beaten 100 times for being with a man who was not her husband.
And in September 2014, Aceh passed a law against homosexuality: any person who is caught having consensual homosexual sex is punished with 100 lashes, 100 months in jail or a fine of 1,000 grams of gold.
