Ex-VP, Alex Ekwueme dies at 85

Nigeria’s former vice president Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme is dead.

The news of his death was contained in a statement signed by his brother, the traditional ruler of Oko in Anambra State, Igwe Laz Ekwueme.

The statement stated that the ex vice who was in office from 1979 to 1983 died by 10:00pm in a London clinic on Sunday.

The statement read: “Ekwueme family regrets to announce the peaceful passing away of their patriarch, the former Vice-President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Dr Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme GCON.

“The sad event occurred at the London Clinic at 10:00 pm on Sunday 19th November 2017.”

Recall that Ekwueme who recently turned 85 suffered health challenges in his Enugu home and was rushed to a Neurosurgery Hospital in Enugu.

This led to a medical visit in London on the orders of president Muhammadu Buhari.

As soon as he was stabilised at the Enugu hospital, he was flown to London in an air ambulance.
