Leakage: FG weeds out fake, dead military pensioners

In a bid to block all leakages in government’s expenditure, the Federal Government has conducted a military pensions’ verification.

The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, who inaugurated the exercise at the Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja said the Federal Government would update its pensioners’ records and help to eliminate fake or dead pensioners from the database.

The military verification exercise which lasted for a week was simultaneously held in the 36 states, covering the ranks from Privates to Major-Generals as well as pensioners “critically sick and hospitalised.”

Dan-Ali, whose speech was read by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs Nuratu Batagarawa, said the verification lasted for one week.

The minister said, “The military pensions exercise is conducted by the defence ministry to re-appraise the effectiveness of the military pensions” administration with a view to making improvements. The overall objective of this exercise is to block leakages in the expenditures of the Federal Government, update the pensioners’ records and to improve the integrity of the military pensions’ database.

“It is also aimed at eliminating deceased and fake pensioners from the system. We are conducting this exercise nationwide at designated military and non – military formations. We appreciate the courage and sacrifices of some of the pensioners who participated in the Second World War, the Nigerian civil war, the peace support operations around the world and internal security operations.

“I solicit the cooperation of all stakeholders to ensure a successful conduct of the 2017 military pensions’ verification exercise, which will help us to block leakages in the expenditure of the government.”

Earlier, the acting Chairman of the Military Pensions Board, Brig. – Gen. Adekunle Adesope, said the documents required from the military pensioners were discharge certificates, identity cards and record of service.
