This is how the Palestinians responded to the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel

The Muslim group Hamas called for a new ‘intifada’.

Palestinian protesters unleashed their anger on Thursday against Israeli police in the West Bank and Gaza, after US President Donald Trump acknowledged Jerusalem as Israel’s capital .

More than twenty Palestinians were injured by rubber bullets or live bullets, and demonstrations against Trump’s decision were mounted in several Muslim countries.

The Palestinian leaders claim East Jerusalem, occupied and then annexed by Israel in 1967, as the capital of the state to which they aspire. But Israel considers that all Jerusalem, both east and west, is its “eternal and indivisible” capital.

Until now, the international community has not wanted to recognize Jerusalem as a capital, a very sensitive and key issue in the peace process.

In East Jerusalem, the Palestinian part of the city, considered to be occupied by the international community, the shops and schools remained closed due to the strike called by Palestinian groups.

There were also demonstrations during the day in Ramallah, the Palestinian political capital, in Bethlehem, also located in the occupied West Bank, and in several locations in the Gaza Strip, a Palestinian territory subjected to the rigorous Israeli blockade.

On the other hand, the Hamas movement, which governs the Gaza Strip, called for a new popular uprising. “One can not face the Zionist policy of the United States more than launching a new intifada ” said Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh in a speech in Gaza.

Intifada is an Arabic word that literally translates as ‘shaking’. It has been used to refer to the legitimate means of resistance against oppression throughout the Middle East for decades.

Following the announcement, the Israeli army announced the deployment of military reinforcements in the West Bank.
