US Defense Secretary warned that “storm clouds are gathering” on the Korean peninsula

Jim Mattis also asked his troops to “be ready” to strengthen diplomacy and study the Korean War ended in 1953. “Knowing what went wrong that last time is as important as being prepared now,” he said.

“My fine young soldiers, the only way our diplomats can speak with authority and be believed is if you’re ready to go,” Mattis said in front of a group of soldiers and aviators in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, during a tour of different bases of the Armed Forces before Christmas.

“The storm clouds are gathering” on the Korean peninsula, he added, according to the AP news agency .

Mattis also recommended to the uniformed ones that they read on the history of Korean War, between 1950 and 1953, in which the United States and South Korea faced China and North Korea.
“Knowing what went wrong the last time around is as important as knowing your own testing, so that you’re forewarned — you know what I’m driving at here,” he said as soldiers listened in silence. “So you gotta be ready,” he said.

At the same time, the defense secretary repeated that he believes the diplomatic channel is the correct one to resolve the conflict , and considered that he does not expect Kim Jong-un, the North Korean dictator, to attack during the winter Olympic Games that will be held in February in South Korea.

” I do not think Kim is so stupid as to face the whole world killing his athletes,” he said.

The regime in Pyongyang conducted numerous tests of ballistic missiles and a nuclear test this year, taking the peninsula to the brink of a war whose consequences can be devastating.

“I do not think Kim is so stupid as to face the whole world,” said Mattis

Although there are differences in the chosen route to resolve the conflict, the international community as a whole condemned these provocations and the UN Security Council last week voted its last resolution imposing sanctions on North Korea.

The resolution reduces oil exports from the airtight regime by 90%, and orders the repatriation of its workers abroad within 24 months.

In addition, the government of President Donald Trump maintains his threat of military action in the event that diplomacy fails, and in this regard regularly conducts exercises in the peninsula, which are also betting 28,000 US troops.
