A fire on Thursday night hit an apartment building in the Bronx neighborhood of New York , leaving at least 12 people dead and four seriously injured, the mayor of the city said.

A one-year-old boy is among those killed in the incident , which is now under the control of firefighters, Mayor Bill de Blasio told reporters .

“I regret to report that 12 New Yorkers have died, including a baby of about one-year-old,” de Blasio told reporters from the scene after firefighters extinguished the flames.

Four other people were seriously injured and are fighting for their lives, officials said.

The mayor warned that the number of victims could increase.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is known to have started on the first floor of the building and spread quickly to the third floor, according to officials.

The victims were aged between one year and over 50 year, de Blasio said.

The fire started at approximately 7:00 pm local time (00:00 GMT Friday) on an extremely cold night, with temperatures of less than 0 ° C.

Around 170 firefighters were in the five-story residential building. Apparently, the building had no elevator, local media reported.

A witness, Xanral Collins, told the New York Post that he saw a father running into the building without being able to enter.

“I saw him scream: ‘My babies are dead! My babies are dead,'” he said.

One of the deadliest fires in the city’s recent history was also recorded in the Bronx in 2007. Nine children and one adult died from fire that originated from an ambient heater.
