After buying Lucasfilm at a high price tag of $4.06 billion, in just few years, Disney has managed to do great things with the latest addition to its empire.
Combined, Disney and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi , Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Stars Wars: The Force Awakens have surpassed $4.06 billion in ticket sales at the worldwide box office.
The figure, of course, does not mean that Disney has recovered what it spent on the acquisition, since the company has spent millions to produce the films and shares revenue from ticket sales with theaters. However, it is an interesting parameter that points to a bright future for Disney in reference to Star Wars , although the new films are not without their controversy .
In addition to ticket sales, Disney has also earned money in product ranges related to Star Wars , such as toys and attractions in its theme parks.
The last Jedi has sold $934.2 million in movie tickets worldwide to date. This number is expected to increase as the film does not debut in China until January 5. The awakening of force sold $2.068 billion in tickets worldwide while Rogue One sold $1.056 billion.
The acquisition of Lucasfilm is only one of several large acquisitions made by Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney. In 2006, Iger organized the purchase of Pixar. Three years later, he bought Marvel Entertainment.
This year, Iger has another acquisition in mind: that of 21st Century Fox, which has a value of $52.4 billion.
