Premier League, Goodison Park – Everton 0 Manchester United 2 (Martial 57, Lingard 81)
Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard both scored lovely goals as Manchester United got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory at Everton.
While United dominated possession in a mundane first half, they registered only one shot on target but they were much improved after the restart and broke the deadlock on 57 minutes when Martial caressed the ball into the top corner from the edge of the box, after Juan Mata had struck the post.
Everton enjoyed a spell of pressure as they searched for an equaliser but they were caught on the break on 81 minutes. Jesse Lingard sealed the points with his 10th goal of the season when he collected the ball from 35 yards out, surged forward and curled the ball past a helpless Jordan Pickford.
United’s first win after three consecutive draws moves them up to second but Jose Mourinho’s side are still 12 points behind leaders Manchester City. Meanwhile Everton, who have now lost two straight games under Sam Allardyce, remain ninth.
A tale of two halves: In the first period, United looked extremely tired and disjointed. They only managed one shot on target, despite enjoying total domination of the ball. Whatever Mourinho said at half-time obviously worked though, and the visitors were much improved after the restart. Pogba decided enough was enough and took control in midfield, the skipper leading by example by providing two assists. United were close to their best in the second period.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Paul Pogba (Manchester United): Could have been accused of playing too deep in the first half when he was extremely muted. But he clicked into gear after the restart, controlled midfield and looked every bit the £89m player. Revelled in the role as skipper.
