This is the Kia Niro EV: an electric prototype that promises more than 380 kilometers autonomy

First came the teaser and now we can finally see the new Kia Niro EV, a prototype presented at CES 2018 with a completely electric Niro future.

The Korean manufacturer promises to have 16 “electrified” vehicles on the street by 2025 , including a fuel cell model (electric powered by hydrogen) by 2020.

With this future variant, the Kia Niro would be a “three in one” like its cousin the Hyundai IONIQ, since currently a conventional hybrid version and a plug-in hybrid are offered. According to the brand, the electric Niro EV is the next step in the electrification of its range.

According to the manufacturer, Kia incorporates in this concept a system called Active Pedestrian Warning System (APWS), which aims to improve the safety of pedestrians thanks to speakers located on the front of the vehicle and obstacle recognition technology. At the moment of detecting a pedestrian in front of the car, the loudspeakers issue an alert to warn of the presence of the vehicle .

Electric propulsion

Although at first we thought that the electric propulsion system of the Kia Niro EV would be the same as that of the IONIQ, the truth is that this prototype incorporates a next generation system. It combines a 150 kW (210 hp) electric motor with a lithium polymer battery with a capacity of 64 kWh , and promises a range of 383 kilometers , which is far from the 280 kilometers that the IONIQ homologous.

For now nothing is known about whether Kia uses this prototype as a showcase of future technologies for other models, or if the hypothetical Kia Niro EV production could have this propulsion system. In any case, the manufacturer has not confirmed anything regarding the launch of a future electric Niro to the market .
