The cards are on the table. Real Madrid want to sign Neymar and getting him out of PSG will cost dearly. We are talking about ‘only’ more than 300 million euros.
eymar has been a priority target for Real Madrid for the past seven years. Up to three times there have been direct negotiations with the player’s father, but nothing has come to fruition. Twice Neymar Snr. has opted for the hard cash.
Five years later the price of these shady deals continues to increase but it is clear that it will be a high amount. In money terms, more than 200 million euros. In justice terms, that will be ruled by a judge.
It is no secret that Real will be back for Neymar in the summer.
Florentino Perez has himself already joked that: “He would have more chance of winning the Ballon d’Or in Madrid , this is a club that gives great players what they need.”
Making such a statement hours after Cristiano Ronaldo won the trophy for a fifth time made a clear indication that a succession is underway. Needless to say, the Portuguese forward didn’t like the joke.
This wouldn’t ever be admitted to, but Perez and his board would do wonders if Ronaldo made moves to leave the club once again in the summer and this time had a firm offer to see it through. That is why they say in Madrid that ‘it is not an opportune moment’ to discuss the winger’s request, via the media, to double his salary. Everything has been very diplomatic.
The 2019 Clause
But to let Ronaldo leave means that Neymar must arrive. That is something that Real Madrid know won’t be very easy, after their previous experiences. However, it is striking that they have such confidence in signing the Brazilian, knowing as they do that it isn’t until the summer of 2019 that a release clause comes into effect, letting him leave for 222m euros.
That means, for Neymar to leave this July, he must be brave in the face of Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al Khelaifi’s statement that: “Neymar signing for Madrid is impossible.”
This may not seem like the ideal basis for a negotiation but president Perez is aware that he will have to roll his sleeves up to bring in a world class player this summer. Kylian Mbappe escaped last year and the only guaranteed replacement for Ronaldo would be Neymar.
Of course, it would help if the player is willing to press hard to get his move back to Spain, but we will have to wait and see if that is enough.
