South African lawmakers elect Ramaphosa as president of the country
South African lawmakers have elected Ramaphosa as president, according to reports from Vanguard News.
This comes in less than 24 hours since Jacob Zuma announced his immediate resignation yesterday, after his party, the African National Congress (ANC) threatened to dismiss him with a motion of censure.
Zuma, weakened by a scandal involving the diversion of public funds, announced in a televised address to the nation that he had “reached the decision to resign as president of the Republic for immediate purposes.”
The debate on the early exit of the president, with a mandate until 2019, is detonated by his bad image and by the serious corruption scandals that surround him.
