ARM creates iSIM, a new SIM card format that will be integrated into our mobile processors

The mobile microprocessor design company ARM defines the future of our smartphones, and it seems that this future involves saying goodbye to the traditional Nano SIMs that are now the de facto standard in this area.
In fact, the alternative seemed to be the eSIM that we had seen in some tablets, smart phones or watches, but at ARM they have developed a new format called iSIM that will be integrated into the SoC used by mobile phone manufacturers.

Size matters, the cost also
The difference in size is evident: the current Nano SIMs measure 12.3 x 8.8 mm, while the iSIM will have a size not yet determined but will be “a fraction of a square millimeter”.

That will help on two fronts: the first, to save space on our mobile devices. The second, save costs for manufacturers, who instead of paying “tens of cents” per card will now pay less than ten cents for each one of them.

PCper reports that the new format could take time to reach our smartphones, however: the first objective of the iSIM will be the IoT solutions as wireless sensors that need wireless connectivity.

The ARM’s idea is unique but will have to beat the game to the eSIM (which measures 6 x 5 mm) and also convince the operators. For ARM, the advantages of integrating the iSIM into the SoC of manufacturers such as Qualcomm or MediaTek is evident, and in fact they expect to see the first solutions (IoT, we insist) on operation before the end of the year.
