Facebook cancels its idea to split the news feed in two

Facebook has announced that it has decided to back down in its two different News Feeds experiment.

Last October, Facebook began a test in six countries, by creating a version of Facebook with two different News Feeds: one as a dedicated place with posts from friends and family and another, it called ‘Explorer Feed’ for posts from Pages and Groups.

But now, in a post on the Facebook blog , the head of the news feed Adam Mosseri has announced that the experiment has reached its end and the idea has been discarded . The decision is because the users in Bolivia, Cambodia, Guatemala, Serbia, Slovakia and Sri Lanka, the countries where the test was conducted, did not like the change, making it harder for people in the test countries to access important information.

“You have given us the answer: people do not want two separate feeds,” explained Mosseri. “In the surveys, people told us that they were less satisfied with the posts they were seeing, and that having two separate feeds did not really help them connect more with friends and family.”

When Facebook does this type of test in certain countries, it does so to test the reactions of its users to the proposed changes before applying them all internationally. Sometimes the test works well and the changes end up reaching us all, but in others simply see that the idea was not so good and end up canceling it.

“We also received feedback that we made it harder for people in the test countries to access important information, and that we didn’t communicate the test clearly.” he explained. “We’re acting on this feedback by updating the way we evaluate where to test new products, and how we communicate about them.”
