Arizona police say it was “completely impossible” to avoid Uber’s self-driving car accident
Yesterday we talked about how a self-driven Uber vehicle on a test drive had run over a woman who finally died. Many media reported the breaking news with headlines such as “First road death involving a fully self-driving car happens in US” However, the police do not think that the fault lies with the vehicle .
It happened in Tempe, Arizona. A deadly run over when a woman was crossing the street in a part where there was no pedestrian crossing or road markings that gave preference. At the time of the accident there was an Uber technician behind the wheel, but everything happened so fast that he did not have time to react.
Now, and after several hours, the police have reported that “it would have been impossible to avoid the accident .” According to the San Francisco Chronicle , Tempe Police Chief Sylvia Moir explained:
The driver said it was like a flash, the person came out in front of them. His first warning of the collision was the sound of the collision itself.
The vehicle, which as we said had a human in the driver’s seat, was traveling at 60 km / h in a zone of 55 km / h when it hit Elaine Herzberg, 49, as she was pushing a bicycle and abruptly walked from a center median towards a traffic lane.
The police chief added that, seeing the videos obtained from the cameras in the Uber Volvo, “it is very clear that it would have been very difficult to avoid this collision in any way (autonomous or human-driven) based on how she came from the shadows right into the roadway.”
That being the case, everything seems to indicate that the self-driving vehicle could not have been guilty. It is also worth noting that this is the first time that a pedestrian dies in an accident involving a car without a driver, and that this technology is still in the testing phase.
That said, Uber has stopped all its tests with autonomous automobiles while the investigation is being carried out. In a previous statement, a spokesperson for the company said: ” Our hearts are with the victim’s family. We are fully cooperating with local authorities in their investigation of this incident . ” [ via The Next Web ]
