As a younger member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, Kylie Jenner had high expectations to overcome. “I struggled for a while until I found something to do on my own,” she told FORBES.
And it did not take long. At age 21, she owns Kylie Cosmetics, launched only two years ago, and her lip-polishing empire has made her the highest-paid, richest celebrity in the world under 30 years of age. Kylie earned $ 166.5 million during the review period, from June 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018, with a fortune estimated at $ 900 million.
Ed Sheeran comes on stream with $ 110 million. The British singer-songwriter made the bulk of this estate on a world tour at the age of 27, but made a fair amount of money by playing his songs.
Brazilian superstar Neymar completes the Top 3 celebrities with $ 90 million in earnings. The 26-year-old signed a contract with Paris Saint Germain for five seasons – earning him $ 350 million in salary until June 2022.
Off the field, Neymar has lucrative deals with Nike and Red Bull, among others brands.
Most well-paid celebrities under the age of 30 are athletes. The Top 10 includes a reality star (Kylie), four musicians and five athletes. The young group together earned $ 723 million in 12 months, before taxes and fees.
The youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner clan is one of only two women on the list. Although this is partly due to the number of professional athletes, the overall ranking of the highest paid celebrities in the world is highly unbalanced – 85% of its members are male. This reflects a pay gap between men and women that is hardly limited to entertainment. In 2017, the Americans earned $ 0.82 out of every $ 1 earned by an American.
The only other celebrity woman under 30 to reach the Top 10 is singer Taylor Swift. The 28-year-old artist earned $ 80 million during the period under review thanks to the album and the “Reputation” tour. Taylor recently signed a new contract with Universal that could be worth up to $ 200 million in guarantees.
But she’s not the only celebrity on the list whose earnings have grown. Canelo Alvarez, now boxing’s biggest pay-per-view star following the retirement of Floyd Mayweather, raised $ 44.5 million for his high-profile fight with Gennady Golovkin, who generated $ 1.3 million. Alvarez, 28, may become the highest-paid athlete in the world next year after signing a five-year contract with the DAZN sports streaming service for 11 fights. The deal is worth at least $ 365 million, an average of $ 33 million per showdown. With two clashes in DAZN, payment for the fight with Golovkin and several million dollars of sponsorship, Alvarez will pocketed at least $ 120 million over 12 months.
The survey took into account the period from June 1, 2017 to June 1, 2018. The figures are gross – before deduction of fees for agents, managers and lawyers. The gains raised are based on Pollstar Pro data, as well as interviews with industry experts.
Although only 19 of the world’s 100 best paid celebrities are under 30, millennials are showing their more experienced colleagues how to win the race for success.
